Welcome to Highrock!
We're so glad you could visit our website. If you're wanting to find out more about our church, this is a good place to start. But the best way to get to know us is to visit! We'd love to welcome you to any of our Sunday services or other events. Please click on the calendar or service times to find out more information.
Whether you've been going to church ever since you could remember, or are just asking questions, you are most welcome at Highrock.
Highrock's Lenten Fast
As Pastor Dave mentioned in his sermon this past Sunday, Highrock is engaging in a shared fast this Lent. We're restricting our food consumption to a vegan diet on Fridays (sundown Thursday night to sundown Friday night) and using the money we save (e.g. $5, $10, $15) to purchase bed nets for families in the Congo to prevent malaria related deaths (for more information see our Lenten Fasting Guide). Toward the end of Lent Highrock will collect the money that you saved each Friday that you fasted with us (make checks payable to Covenant World Relief and put "Bed Nets for Life" in the memo line). By practicing this fast together, we imitate Jesus who fasted from his divine privileges in order to bring us salvation. What’s more, we come closer to understanding the cost and difficulty of Jesus’ sacrifice for us at a deeper level and we seek solidarity with the poor around the world whose diet often only consists of simple foods such as rice and beans.
If you forget your fast at some point during the day or give in to the urge to break the fast, don’t give up for the rest of the day. Fasting may be new to many of us and it will be hard to remember or follow through at times. Let it remind you of how difficult it must have been for Jesus to live a perfectly consistent fast of His divinity and let it remind you that He did all of that for you. Fasting reminds us of our own weakness and need for Jesus which our material blessings can often mask.
As you fast, try to use our short devotional that was printed on the second page of our Lenten Fasting Guide insert from this past Sunday. When you pray the Lord’s Prayer, pause at the phrase “your kingdom come” and imagine what that would look like, and what it might look like for you to take part in that. Keep this phrase in mind as you read the Scripture reading for this week, Isaiah 58:3-12, and go through the reflection questions on the insert. Take some time to read up on the Congo. Then, as you close, pray the Lord’s Prayer again with the Isaiah passage in mind and in light of all that you have reflected upon and read. When you ask for God’s kingdom to come, pause and pray in some specific ways for the Congo. After you have finished praying, ask yourself if you experienced the Lord’s Prayer differently the second time through. Lastly, get together with other Highrockers to break the fast together on Friday evening. Share your experiences and reflections from your fast, both the difficulties and the blessings.
May God bring healing to the people of the Congo and may He speak to all of us this Lent as he molds us more into His image through our shared fast.
